Ora.Cat

Speak from day one. Never study a grammar rule.

Ora.Cat teaches a language the way you picked up your first one: sentences you actually use, heard, understood and repeated out loud until they are yours.

Works in the browser and on your phone, with headphones, offline. No app store, no download.

Ora, the Ora.Cat cat, waving hello

No conjugation tables. No exercises. No exams.

You did not learn your first language by studying it, and you do not need to study this one either. Ora.Cat is built on the Natural Approach of Krashen and Terrell: you acquire a language by understanding messages, not by memorising rules about them. So the app never gives you a rule to learn — it gives you sentences you understand and asks you to say them.

  • You never study rules. You absorb them from sentences whose meaning you already have in front of you.
  • There are no wrong answers, no scores and no streak to break. The only assessment is the one you make of yourself, privately.
  • Grammar arrives on its own, exactly the way it did the first time — as a feel for what sounds right.

How a session actually goes

Two screens, five minutes, headphones. That is the entire product — everything else exists to keep those two screens honest.

1. Listen

A real sentence in your new language, spoken by a natural voice, with its meaning right beside it. Nothing to decode: you get the message first.

2. Say it back, out loud

Repeat it while the meaning is still attached — shadowing. Your mouth learns the sounds and rhythm on the first day, not after six months of theory.

3. Recall it from memory

Later the app shows only your own language, and you produce the sentence yourself. That is the moment it stops being something you have heard and becomes something you can say.

Why it works

Sentences from a real day

Ordering coffee, running late, saying what you think of the film. The phrases people genuinely use, not textbook dialogues nobody has ever spoken.

Always one step past what you know

Every sentence is scored for difficulty, and new material is served just beyond your current level — comprehensible input, i+1. Hard enough to teach you something, easy enough to understand.

It comes back right before you forget it

You rate each attempt from one to five stars, and a spaced-repetition scheduler decides when the sentence returns. Effortless today means weeks from now; shaky means tomorrow.

Nothing is ever demanded of you

Rating is optional everywhere. You can put in headphones, listen to an entire deck, rate none of it — and it still counts as study, because it is study.

Your first sentence out loud is five minutes away

Not "after unit three". Today. You press play, you hear it, you see what it means, and you say it. That is the loop, and it is the same loop on day one and on day four hundred — only the sentences get braver.

Un caffè, per favore.

A coffee, please.

Hear it. Understand it. Say it. That is the whole method.

Twelve languages, in both directions

Each one is available both as a language you already speak and as a language you are acquiring — so the meaning always arrives in words you know. Japanese and Mandarin included, with difficulty measured per character so the sentences you meet are genuinely graded rather than shuffled.

Questions people ask first

Do I really never study grammar?

Really. There is no grammar lesson, no conjugation table and no fill-in-the-blank exercise anywhere in the app. You meet grammar the way a child does — inside sentences you already understand — until the right form is simply the one that sounds right to you.

When do I start speaking?

In the first session. The opening screen plays a sentence and asks you to repeat it out loud, so you are producing the language within minutes of signing in. There is no silent period you have to earn your way out of.

What if I get it wrong?

Nothing happens, because nothing in the app can be wrong. There are no scores, no penalties and no streak you can break. You rate yourself one to five stars purely to tell the scheduler when to bring the sentence back — a low rating is routing information, not a failure.

Does this work for Japanese or Mandarin?

Yes. Sentences in scripts written without word spaces are measured per character rather than per word, so they are graded by real difficulty and served in the same gentle order as any other language.

Do I need to sit at a desk?

No — the app is built for a commute. It installs as a progressive web app, keeps working with no signal, caches the audio, and queues anything you rate offline to sync when you are back. Headphones are the only equipment.
